Coronation Street viewers were heartbroken over a recent horrific scene that showcased a major issue in hospitals. Channique Sterling-Brown’s character Dee-Dee Bailey’s life was on the line on Monday when she buckled in pain while visiting Lauren Bolton and her son Frankie in the hospital

Dee-Dee thought it was down to Braxton Hicks but Lauren advised Dee-Dee to get checked out by doctors in the maternity ward. However, her concerns weren’t taken seriously but her high blood pressure was noted by nurses. She was sent home to rest and Dee-Dee called her pal Alya, who told her she should have never been sent home.

Her water soon broke and she was taken straight back to the hospital, along with dad Ed and brothers James and Michael. She was left suffering without a bed and a white midwife even made a shocking comment saying, “Women like you are built for this”.

An appalled Ed went to a Black midwife, who immediately rushed into action and a doctor soon arrived to help Dee-Dee. She was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and was informed she needed to give birth.

While things were calm for a while, Dee-Dee’s comments about still feeling sick were soon dismissed by a white nurse. She was even accused of being aggressive when she snapped about instructions that were ignored.

Things took a heartbreaking turn when Dee-Dee went unconscious

Things took a heart-breaking turn when Dee-Dee fell unconscious and it was discovered she was bleeding heavily. Before she went unconscious, she felt something wasn’t right and she told a nurse she felt something wet on her lower half but she was ignored.

Fans found out she suffered a haemorrhage but will have to wait and see if she survives the frustrating and heart-breaking situation. Viewers praised the ITV programme for highlighting the issue and rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts on the scenes.

One user said: “Sad to see NHS maternity services failing DeeDee,” while another posted: “Frightened first time mum, sent home with paracetamol & told to light a scented candle, crowded waiting area, understaffed ward, practically giving birth in the waiting area, potential medical errors.

“Actually, to #Corrie for highlighting these issues.” One fan commented: “Admire #corrie tenacity at not shying away from these scenes with DeeDee and how the NHS let Black women down daily especially during pregnancy and labour. It is actually horrific watching it play out in real time but I’m glad they’re highlighting it. It’s a major problem.”

James, who was the one adopting the baby, said that if Dee-Dee died, it would be the fault of the hospital staff for ignoring her previous concerns.

According to research done by the Guardian last year, the births of babies to Black mothers are almost twice as likely to be investigated for possible NHS safety failings. More than 2,300 investigation were completed by England’s maternity safety watch dog between 2020 and 2023.

It was found for every 1,000 deliveries by Black women, there were 2.3 investigations compared with the 1.3 investigations for white women.
