The Repair Shop leaves guest in tears as treasured lamp linked to late friend is lovingly restored

The Repair Shop delivered one of its most moving moments yet when a guest broke down after seeing a cherished lamp, once owned by his late best friend, brought back to life.
The much-loved BBC series took an emotional turn during Wednesday night’s episode as experts Sonnaz Nooranvary and Angelina were handed a fragile, battered lamp with a deeply personal story behind it.
The item had been brought in by John Wilson, from London, who explained that the unusual lamp once belonged to his close friend Brian — a man who filled his Soho flat with glamour, laughter and extravagant cocktail parties during the 1980s.
According to John, Brian’s stylish apartment was built around the lamp, which became a centrepiece of those glittering, happy memories from a very different time.
But behind the sparkle was heartbreak.
As the AIDS epidemic devastated lives, Brian was diagnosed as HIV-positive. John became not just his friend, but his carer and closest companion, standing by him until he died in the mid-1990s.
Before he passed away, Brian gave the lamp to John — turning it from a beautiful object into something far more powerful: a lasting link to the person he loved like family.
Speaking on the show, John said: “We were really, really close. He was my family.”
He added: “So it became a very sort of normal thing for me to want to look after him, to keep an eye on him.”
Over time, however, the treasured lamp had become damaged, brittle and cracked. Though still incredibly important to him, it was in desperate need of care — leading John to place it in the hands of The Repair Shop team.

Sonnaz and Angelina carefully worked to restore the piece, preserving not only its striking appearance but also the emotional history it carried.
When the experts finally unveiled the finished result, John was visibly stunned.
“Oh my God! Oh wow,” he exclaimed. “It looks exactly like it looked. I can’t believe it — it’s incredible.”
But it was when the lamp was switched on that the full emotion of the moment hit.
Overcome, John quietly said: “I’m so happy.”
As the experts told him they could now understand why Brian had loved it so much, John began to tear up.
Fighting back emotion, he said: “He’d be really pleased.”
It was a simple sentence, but one that seemed to carry decades of love, grief and memory.
Taking a moment to compose himself, John added that he was absolutely delighted with the restoration — and viewers could instantly see why the moment struck such a chord.
In true The Repair Shop fashion, it was never just about fixing an object.
It was about preserving a friendship.
A shared past.
And a piece of someone who is no longer here.
And as that lamp glowed once again, so too did the memory of the man who first made it shine.
