Over Your Dead Body, the twisty new horror-thriller starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving, has been climbing steadily up Prime Video’s trending chart following its release earlier this week.
The film is an English-language remake of the 2021 Norwegian action-comedy The Trip and follows Dan and Lisa Burton, a couple trapped in a strained marriage while both struggle with stalled careers.
In an effort to escape their problems, the pair retreat to a remote cabin, only to make a shocking discovery: each of them has secretly been planning to kill the other. Their situation takes an unexpected turn when outside visitors arrive, forcing the couple into an uneasy alliance.
Directed by Jorma Taccone from a screenplay by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, Over Your Dead Body landed on Prime Video on Wednesday (10 June) and appears to have already made a strong impression with viewers.
At the time of writing, the horror-thriller ranks as the third most-watched film on the UK streamer, trailing only Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Jack Ryan: Ghost War. Globally, it has climbed even higher, sitting at #2 on FlixPatrol’s charts.
Critical response has also been largely positive, with Rotten Tomatoes currently reporting a 69% approval rating based on 91 reviews. The site’s consensus highlights the film’s “inventive gore and electric performances.”
“The pairing of Ready or Not’s Weaving with Shrinking star Segel sparks huge laughs with both actors going all out during the outrageous ouch-inducing fights they have with each other and three unexpected cabin guests,” noted the San Jose Mercury News.
TheWrap also praised the film, writing: “Taccone and his team have managed to take the existential and interior strife common in a marriage and transfigure it into a riotous and convivial physical battle for survival and sanity.”
“While not entirely flawless in its execution, Taccone’s Over Your Dead Body is a thrilling and hilarious horror movie that delivers plenty of plot twists and gruesome wounds,” wrote Little White Lies.
The film has also received a mixed-to-positive response from audiences on IMDb, where it currently holds a user rating of 6.3/10 based on 11,000 votes.
In one enthusiastic 10/10 review, a viewer described it as “freaking phenomenal” and even argued that it was “better than the original.”
